Champions League teams’ pre-season friendlies

UEFA Champions League qualifying is in full flow, but what about the 22 sides already assured of a place in the group stage? We check out their plans and pre-season form.

Anderlecht (BEL)
Anderlecht started pre-season exactly a month after the end of their 2016/17 campaign, on 21 June. René Weiler’s men defeated Zulte Waregem 2-1 in the Belgian Super Cup on 22 July, and launched their bid for a 35th title on 28 July with a 0-0 draw away to Antwerp.

Atlético Madrid (ESP)
Atlético began pre-season on 6 July with their traditional training camp in Los Angeles de San Rafael, an hour from Madrid, with the new Liga campaign provisionally starting the weekend of 19 August. Diego Simeone’s side will commence a new era at their new 68,000 capacity stadium, the Estadio Metropolitano.

Barcelona (ESP)
New coach Ernesto Valverde oversaw his first Barcelona training session on 12 July before embarking on an action-packed tour of the United States, with two Spanish Super Cup games against Real Madrid to come on 12 and 15 August. Their bid to reclaim the Liga crown kicks off on the weekend of 19 August.

Basel (SUI)
Basel returned to training on 22 June, and lost their first fixture of the new Swiss Super League season 2-0 away to Young Boys on 22 July.
