The longest journeys in UEFA club football

With Astana still involved in the UEFA Champions League, and Marítimo entering the UEFA Europa League, UEFA.com maps the extremes of the footballing continent.

A European record was set in the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League group stage when Benfica beat Astana 2-0 at home and drew 2-2 in the return leg in Kazakhstan – the away sides making the longest journeys in the history of UEFA’s club competitions, around 6,174km.

That record could be broken this season, should Astana – taking on Legia in this week’s UEFA Champions League third qualifying round – end up being paired this season with another Portuguese side, Marítimo, whose first challenge of the season is to eliminate Botev Plovdiv in the UEFA Europa League.

Marítimo are based on the Island of Madeira, and should the sides end up meeting – in the UEFA Europa League play-offs or beyond – the teams would face an unprecedented 7,147km trip each way; UEFA.com maps the extremes of the footballing continent.
